About Data Train

Centralized training for doctoral researchers from the member institutions of the U Bremen Research Alliance

Dealing with data and innovative technologies are key competencies of our time. Currently, we are facing a shortage of people with trained data competencies in labor markets worldwide. To meet the massive demand in science and economy, the cross-discipline training program “Data Train–Training in Research Data Management and Data Science” of the “U Bremen Research Alliance” teaches competencies in data literacy, research data management, and data science for doctoral researchers. It covers the entire data value chain and makes an important contribution to data literacy training which is beneficial for science as well as for the private sector. The program and its development is associated with the German National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) initiative and accompanied by the Research Data Working Group of the U Bremen Research Alliance, in which all member institutions are represented .

Together for everyone!

In the program the alliance centrally pools and jointly shares its expertise in the basics of research data management and data science. This saves resources and additionally fosters networking und collaboration across disciplines and institutions (at an early career level). Additional players in the training are companies, primarily from the Bremen region, which have also come to recognize the necessity of building (personnel) resources in the field of research data management and data science.

In the winter term 2020/2021, a course was offered for students of all disciplines at the University of Bremen in the program's pilot phase. Following that, the curriculum for doctoral researchers started for the first time in March 2021 and has been completed in December 2021

Starting in 2022, the plan is to offer the program annually.  

A new component, the “Data Stories”  were established parallel to the launch of the second iteration of the curriculum. In 2022, the curriculum will be consolidated, aligned with competence frameworks of national and international Reserach Data Management and Data Science training programs, and a handbook will be developed to enable the roll-out of the program concept at additional locations.
