Curriculum: Starter Track

Data Train Kick-off 2024

During this event we will provide information on the Data Train program, its scope, concept, and its connection to the Germany-wide initiative "National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI)" and new role within DataNord, the interdisciplinary data competence center for the Bremen region. Further, you will get insights into the curriculum planned for 2024, Data Science applications and the importance of Research Data Management principles when applying Data Science methods. You will have possibilities to pose questions, stimulate discussions and get to know the people associated with the Data Train program over snacks and drinks in the end.

Detailed program:

09:30 Arrive and settle in

10:00 Welcome (Prof. Dr. Iris Pigeot )

10:05 Greetings by the host Fraunhofer IFAM (Dr. Volker Zöllmer)

10:15 The importance of research data and their management across disciplines (Prof. Dr. Frank Oliver Glöckner)

Research data & their management then, now and future: The introduction will start by defining the importance of research data as well as their management along the data life cycle. The National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) will be introduced and its goals and current status commented, explained by the example for NFDI4Biodiversity and what has been achieved since the onset of Data Train in 2021.

10:40 Bremen as northern light for data literacy: DataNord (Dr. Tanja Hörner, Dr. Lena Steinmann)

Are you seeking to improve your data skills? DataNord is an interdisciplinary data competence center for the Bremen region, tailored to support researchers at every career stage in their work with data. The practical opportunities to boost your data proficiency, including specialized trainings, self-paced learning materials, hackathons, summer schools, counselling services, networking events, and research-project support will be introduced. The overall goal is to guide you on how to effectively utilize DataNord to enhance your data literacy and maximize the potential of your data.

11:05 Data Train – The cross-disciplinary training program on research data management and data science (Dr. Maya Dalby)

To meet the massive demand for data skills in science and economy, the Data Train Program was established by the member institutions of the U Bremen Research Alliance in 2021. The program is provided annually and is targeted at doctoral researchers, but also open to everyone interested in strengthening their data skills, depending on the type of course or if capacities are available. The focus is on general and advanced competencies in data literacy, research data management and data science. The Data Train program is associated with the NFDI and now embedded in DataNord. The background, motivation and schedule of the Data Train Program will be introduced and explained.

11:30 Beautiful insights — The art and science of data visualization (Data Story by Moritz Stefaner)

As an independent “Truth and Beauty Operator”, Moritz Stefaner is exploring novel ways to create expressive, intriguing, and elegant data experiences. Exploring the art and the science of successful data visualization alike, he will discuss his learnings from pushing the boundaries of the field — from interactive experiences over data sculptures to even using food for representing data.
