The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has been offering the "Hilde Domin Program" scholarship program with funding from the Federal Foreign Office (AA). It supports doctoral candidates at risk worldwide who are denied access to education in their country of origin. It is intended to offer candidates the opportunity to begin or continue their research in Germany. The doctoral candidates nominated and selected are enrolled in departments or research institutions of their personal choice and individual qualifications and receive a scholarship that covers the necessary costs of the research stay.
Nomination and selection procedure
It is not possible for potential candidates to apply on their own. They must be nominated by an institution. For this purpose, the institutions submit a pre-prepared nomination form and a nomination declaration to the DAAD. After an initial review of the candidates, the candidates are contacted by the DAAD to subsequently apply via an online application portal. The DAAD checks the application for completeness and formal correctness. However, a final decision is then made by an independent selection committee.
Requirements
Doctoral candidates from almost all disciplines can be nominated. Exceptions are the fields of fine arts, performing arts, design, visual communication, music, film and architecture as well as human medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine. Candidates must not have been in Germany or other EU countries at the time of the application deadline.
Applicants must be able to present the following documents:
- Proof or credible description of threat to their personal well-being or safety.
- Educational certificates that entitle the applicant to admission to a university and guarantee the completion of the intended course of study or research project according to the database www.anabin.de (Applicants are required to submit German or English translations of documents written in the national language).
