Participation & General Information

Who can participate in Data Train?

The program is primarily designed for doctoral researchers from member institutions of the U Bremen Research Alliance and partner institutions of DataNord. If spots are available, courses may also be opened to other status groups or external participants.

Can I participate even if I am not a doctoral researcher?

Yes, as a postdoctoral researcher, student, or member of another status group, you can register for all Data Train events. However, spots are limited, and you may initially be placed on the waiting list. Please note that the program is primarily tailored to the needs of doctoral researchers from the U Bremen Research Alliance.

Can I participate as a member of an external institution?

Yes. If you are affiliated with an external institution, please indicate your status in the registration form.

Do I have to pay money for the courses?

The Starter Track, Operator Tracks, Hacky Hours and Data Stories courses are free of charge.

Registration & Admission

How can I register for the courses?

You can register online via the Data Train event website by clicking the registration button for your chosen course. You do not have to create an account, just log in via SSO, as specified in this tutorial. If you still encounter problems, feel free to contact us at data-train[at]vw.uni-bremen.de

Can I still register on the day of the courses?

The registration period varies depending on the course and format. Please check the detailed information on the respective course page.

What happens after I registered?

After registration, you will receive a confirmation email with participation details. If a course is fully booked, you will be automatically placed on the waiting list.

What happened if I'm not admitted to the course?

If you are not admitted due to a fully booked course, you will be placed on the waiting list. The order of the waiting list is determined by registration time, career status, and institutional affiliation. If a participant cancels, the first person on the waiting list will be offered the spot.

I am on the waiting list. When will I be informed if I get a spot?

If a spot becomes available, you will be notified 14 days before the course begins.

Can I attend a course without prior registration?

No, registration is required.

How many courses can I register for?

There is no limit to the number of courses you can register for.

Attendance & Cancellations

What do I need to know before attending the courses?

Please check the technical requirements for each course and consider information given under "prior knowledge" before signing up for a workshop.

What should I do if I am unable to attend a course?

If you are unable to attend, please cancel your participation.

I cannot attend—can I give my spot to a friend?

No, you cannot transfer your spot to someone else. Instead, please cancel your registration.

What happens if I cannot attend the entire course?

If you cannot attend the entire course, please contact us in advance at data-train[at]vw.uni-bremen.de.

Proof of Participation, Certificate of Advanced Studies & Course Materials

Will I receive a proof of participation for attending the courses?

Yes, proof of participation is issued for full participation in a course at the end of each track.

When and where can I get my proof of participation?

For participations until 2025:

A proof of participation, listing all attended courses, is available via the Data Train Portal. See the tutorial for help to retrieve it.

For participations from 2026 onwards:

A proof of participation, listing all attended courses, will be issued at the end of each track.

How can I obtain a Certificate of Advanced Studies?

From 2026, Data Train offers an additional qualification program  "Data Train Advanced" in cooperation with the University of Bremen's Academy of Continuing Education, providing a Certificate of Advanced Studies.

Those who do not want to commit to a certificate but still want to develop their data competencies can continue to participate in the regular training program "Data Train" which remains a cost-free offer and issues you a proof of participation.

Where do I find the Zoom link for the course?

The Zoom link can be found on the Data Train event website on the respective course page under "Materials" (registration and login required).

I don’t remember if I registered online or in person. How can I check?

If you are unsure whether you registered online or in person, you can check your registration confirmation email or your profile on Indico.

I forgot my password. How can I reset it?

To reset your password for the Data Train system that was used until 2025, follow this tutorial.

Who can I contact if I have specific questions about the courses?

If you have further questions, please send an email to data-train[at]vw.uni-bremen.de.

Important:

Please indicate email addresses and names consistently  during the registration processes of all workshops (i.e. in the online registration form and the zoom registration) to make sure that this is the same person. This is crucial for the certification procedure. Otherwise, attended courses might not be listed in your certificate.
