SmartReps develops AI-driven methods, such as natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning, to ensure the quality and usability of natural and social science research data. The project enhances competencies in quality assurance, data integration, interoperability, and the responsible use of AI technologies.
The SmartReps project is dedicated to improving access to natural and social science research data, enhancing their interoperability, and fostering trust in the quality of publicly available data. To achieve this, state-of-the-art data science methods – including Natural Language Processing (NLP), chatbots, and machine learning – are being developed, tested, and implemented. A key focus is placed on ensuring the trustworthiness and responsible application of AI-driven approaches. These innovative methods will be directly integrated into the environmental and social science infrastructures of the consortium (PANGAEA, Qualiservice), making these platforms more user-friendly and "intelligent" for long-term benefit.
By providing high-quality, contextualized data, SmartReps empowers the transformation of raw data into domain-specific and interdisciplinary knowledge using advanced data science techniques. The outcomes of the project will be made openly available as best practices to ensure accessibility and reuse by other institutions in research, teaching, and professional development. This open-access approach secures the project's sustainable integration into the scientific ecosystem.
By connecting DataNord's profile areas of "Environmental and Marine Sciences" and "Social Sciences", SmartReps fosters new collaborations among institutions and working groups, creating synergies for the interdisciplinary use of data. Both fields benefit from the collaboration with the Hochschule Bremen, which is involved in the project's leadership and contributes methodological expertise.
