Empowering Researchers
Practical opportunities of the U Bremen Research Alliance (UBRA) and the Data Science Center (DSC)
The following programs are intended for researchers from the DataNord partner institutions.
Learning Opportunities
Learning Opportunities
In DataNord, doctoral researchers and postdocs from the five High Profile Areas—Social Sciences, Health Sciences, Environmental and Marine Sciences, Materials and Engineering Sciences, and Humanities—are trained to become data experts through various training programs.
Data Train - UBRA Training Program
The U Bremen Research Alliance (UBRA) offers a unique, interdisciplinary training program called Data Train - Training in Research Data Management and Data Science, which provides skills in research data management and data science. The program is primarily aimed at doctoral researchers but is open to everyone interested if places are available. In addition to the annually offered curriculum, further training components and networking events are available.

Advanced Learning Modules - DSC Trainings
The six-member help desk team at the Data Science Center (DSC) offers hands-on data science training for researchers from all disciplines. We develop and implement both interdisciplinary and subject-specific training programs for various skill levels. It is also possible to create on-demand offerings for the DataNord partner institutions. If you have specific needs or requests, please feel free to contact Dr. Lena Steinmann directly to discuss the possibilities.
Data Hacks - Hackathons
To provide an accessible introduction to data science methods, we offer interactive learning formats such as Data Hacks. These sessions allow participants to work hands-on with (their own) data, gaining practical experience in handling and analyzing real data while also enhancing their teamwork and problem-solving skills. The Data Hacks are currently in development. Please contact Dr. Tanja Hörner and Dr. Lena Steinmann for more information or if you are interested in collaboration.
Data Snacks - Lunch & Learn
Take a Break with Our "Data Snacks" Online Coffee Lecture!
The Data Science Center at the University of Bremen invites you to join our informative sessions where we share our passion for research data. This accessible knowledge-sharing format is designed for researchers from all disciplines and offers practical tips and insights on various aspects of data handling—from Open Science and FAIR Data to innovative tools and methods for data management and analysis. Don’t miss the next edition of Data Snacks!
Find all the information about Data Snacks here
Data Factories - Data-Specific Summer Schools
Data Factories are summer schools focused on innovative concepts in data processing and analysis methods for specific data types, organized by the Data Train program and the data scientists at the Data Science Center (DSC). This format provides doctoral researchers and postdocs with the opportunity to learn and apply modern techniques and methods directly to their own data under the guidance of experts. Such intensive training with specialists offers practical, individualized, and domain-specific support.
The Data Factories will be announced here as well as on the websites of Data Train and the DSC.
Please contact Dr. Tanja Hörner and Dr. Lena Steinmann for more information.
Digital Toolkit - Self-Learning Materials
The Digital Toolkit is a catalog of selected existing digital self-learning materials, openly accessible to enable on-demand and self-directed training. Researchers can choose training content from this catalog that best suits their needs.
The Digital Toolkit is being developed as part of the Data Train program.

Networking Opportunities
Networking Opportunities
DataNord serves as a networking platform for researchers from different subject areas and offers opportunities for cross-disciplinary and cross-institutional exchange.
Data Stories
Data Stories are networking events hosted by the Data Train program. In these inspiring, application-oriented "stories," storytellers from the private sector or academia highlight the importance of data skills in their specific fields. Current challenges are discussed in a relaxed, collegial atmosphere, providing insights into various work areas and techniques while fostering the development of new ideas that participants can apply to their own research.
Data Stories conclude with an opportunity for networking, allowing participants to build an interdisciplinary and cross-institutional network that extends into the private sector.

Hacky Hours
Hacky Hours are informal meetups where data science experts and practitioners come together. These sessions provide an opportunity to discuss specific issues and serve as a platform for application-specific support and knowledge exchange. Each meetup focuses on a particular topic, such as a specific data science method or a specific process within the data science lifecycle.
Hacky Hours are part of the Data Train program with support of the DSC data scientists.

Klönschnack
Join our open, informal get-together for data enthusiasts with our Data Champions! These regular meetings provide a relaxed environment for networking over snacks and drinks or coffee and cake. Everyone interested in data, data management, or data science is warmly invited to attend! The events are hosted by various partner institutions and organized by colleagues from the community.
The coffee chat will be announced here and on the DSC website.
If you're interested, please reach out to Dr. Lena Steinmann
Data Community Club Meetings
The Data Community Club Meetings bring together Data Champions—a group of data experts from DataNord institutions—and Data Stewards on a regular basis to share their expertise and learn from one another. This network provides a unique platform for professional and collegial exchange on topics covering the entire data lifecycle. It gathers colleagues from various disciplines who work with data or support data management at an operational or advisory level within their institutions.
The meetings are held every two months and offer an opportunity to discuss new tools, share experiences, and learn from each other. It is a dynamic forum where innovative approaches and best practices are discussed to continuously improve data management in Bremen.
If you're interested, please reach out to Dr. Tanja Hörner

Connecting Communities
UBRA Events
The events and networks provide a platform to bring together interdisciplinary communities, learn from one another, and pursue common goals. Be part of an inspiring exchange that unites various disciplines and opens up new perspectives.
Research Data Working Group
DataNord Sounding Board
In the Research Data Working Group (AG Forschungsdaten) of the U Bremen Research Alliance, the activities of its members in the areas of research data management (FDM) and data science are coordinated. The National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) consortia, in which member institutions are involved, are networked locally, and synergies for joint activities are utilized. The network also offers opportunities for collaboration and coordination at the operational level.
The partners of the Bremen Data Competence Center, DataNord, are represented in the Research Data Working Group. This body oversees the progress of the project and acts as a sounding board, meaning that the consortium's feedback and needs are incorporated directly into shaping the services and offerings.

Citizen Science
Train and Learn from the Community
In the project "Guardians of the Hedgehogs," the regional hedgehog population is monitored and protected. This citizen science project encourages active public participation to collect valuable data on the health of hedgehogs and their habitats. Volunteers can spot hedgehogs, conduct small experiments, and visualize collected data on an interactive map. The practical aspect of data collection is enhanced by building hedgehog tunnels and tracking hedgehog footprints.
A key goal of the project is to educate the public about research data and the "One Health" concept. Public events and online informational materials aim to promote proper interaction with hedgehogs and support the creation of hedgehog-friendly gardens. "Guardians of the Hedgehogs" actively contributes to science communication, highlighting the close link between the health of humans, animals, and the environment.
