Valuable health data is collected in studies that can be used to answer important research questions – even beyond the duration of the study. With secure and efficient access to these datasets, researchers can drive advancements in prevention and clinical practice. The Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology – BIPS has created the BIPS Research Data Portal to provide easy data access for external researchers. During his presentation, Dr. Timm Intemann will explain the standardized workflow for requesting and using study data through the portal, options for secure data analysis, and the support available throughout the entire process. He will also present the Biomarkers4Pediatrics network as a practical example, showcasing the potential of combing diverse global datasets.

11:00-11:45: Sharing qualitative research data with Qualiservice

Presenter: Dr. Susanna Prepeliczay, Venue: Schulungsraum 2

The Research Data Centre (RDC) Qualiservice at University Bremen (www.qualiservice.org) archives, curates and provides all types of qualitative research data (e.g. interview transcripts; observation protocols; audiovisual media…) from all Social Sciences disciplines, including Sociology; Political Sciences; Ethnography; Cultural or Religious Sciences; Criminology and others.
The preparation of qualitative research data for archiving and scientific re-use has to consider methodological, ethical and legal challenges due to person related and sensitive contents. For this collaborative task of social researchers and RDC, Qualiservice provides counselling, tools, services and support. Study related metadata are published online and DOIs ensure citability and findability. Qualiservice cooperates with specialised information services for the Political Sciences (Pollux), Ethnology (EVIFA), Criminology (KrimDok) and Sociology (SocioHub).

Presenter: Dr. Susanna Prepeliczay
Organizer: Research Data Centre (RDC Qualiservice)

11:45-13:45: Economic Research Data - Needs, Sources, Current (in German)

Presenters: Dr. Uwe Staroske, Dr. Manfred Nölte, Venue: Besprechungsraum 1220

This workshop is dedicated to the increasing importance of economic data and its analysis. It begins with a brief introduction to data sources and methods. In a further section, the needs identified by the scientific community will be described. There is a consensus that the availability of economic and social science data in Germany lags behind that of many neighboring countries in terms of quality and quantity. The consequences are manifold: the evidence on which economic policy decisions were based in the past did not come from Germany due to a lack of availability, because not enough data was available. This means that politicians and administrators lack relevant information for their decisions. Researchers in Germany often prefer to work with foreign data on foreign issues.

An overview is given of the areas in which important data is missing and how the data gap can be reduced.
(This session will be held in German.)

12:00-14:00: Hands-on research data anonymisation: Textual data

Presenters: Monika Leichtling, Dr. Sebastian Schlerka, Venue: Schulungsraum 2

How can qualitative research data be anonymised? Anonymisation requires balancing the conflicting goals of protecting personal data and enabling scientific re-use. To address both privacy and research needs, Qualiservice has developed the concept of flexible anonymisation/pseudonymisation. This approach allows researchers to create scientific use files with varying degrees of anonymisation by selectively revealing or concealing information contents, depending on the research purpose. The concept of flexible anonymisation is implemented by the anonymisation tool QualiAnon. This workshop provides a hands-on introduction to the flexible anonymisation of qualitative text data and the use of QualiAnon.

Presenters: Monika Leichtling, Dr. Sebastian Schlerka
Organizer: RDC Qualiservice
Venue: SuUB, Schulungsraum 2

Data Snack: Tupperware Your Research - Keep Your Data Fresh, Organized & Ready to Serve

Research data can be a bit like leftovers—easy to lose track of what’s what and sometimes hard to identify. Without a clear system, finding the right file can feel like digging through a fridge full of mystery containers.
Often, talks about research data management are full of overwhelming buzz words and acronyms like FAIR data, RDM and DMPs. This talk is here to help you avoid the data chaos. We’ll walk you through simple, practical strategies for organizing your (research) data, covering folder structures, file naming conventions, storage and backup, version control, and documentation.
No matter your discipline, good research data organization saves time, reduces frustration, and makes collaboration smoother. For researchers, it ensures that data remains accessible and reusable, and for students, it builds habits that make academic (and later professional) life much easier. Join us for some snackable tips that will keep your data fresh, your workflow smooth, and your future self very, very grateful.

Create your Digital Twin! 3D Virtual Object Generation and Data Handling

© Jens Lehmkühler / U Bremen Research Alliance

The creation of Digital Twins of collection objects holds great potential for contemporary museum practice: It enables innovative modes of user interaction as well as novel ways of knowledge production. But complex questions arise with regard to data management, accessibility, and storage. On a hands-on Laser Scan Station, members of the German Maritime Museum's Digitality Group will show typical processes and challenges in 3D-Scanning, and talk about the ways the museum organizes its research data handling. Visitors are invited to bring small (interesting) objects or items to be 3D-scanned: Do they pose a particular technical challenge, like reflecting surfaces? Do the convey an intriguing object history that can be better grasped by interacting with a three-dimensional model?

Centralised Sample Management at the AWI with SAMS

Comprehensive data management is the basis for research at the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research. To facilitate the digitalisation of the entire data flow, an integrative, centralised sample management system (SAMS) is being developed in cooperation with the IndiScale GmbH. This poster presents our system, which will serve as a repository for metadata on sample collection and storage, and ensure the unique identification of samples.

SAMS is based on the open source software LinkAhead. This is a flexible semantic data management system that offers access via a graphical web-based user interface and programmatic API clients. It can be modified and extended for different applications.

Efficient Data Access for ZMT Marine Research: The ZMT DataPortal

In 2020, the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) established the Research Data Service (RDS) working group to support the management of research data in its scientific projects. The RDS provides a secure technical infrastructure for cross-border collaboration and expert advice to scientists at ZMT and its (inter)national partners.
This poster shows how frameworks for support have evolved until today and where they are heading in the future. The RDS provides guidance throughout the entire data lifecycle – from project planning to completion and data reuse. Researchers collaborate in the ZMT DataCloud and the computing cluster ZMT DataLab. Additionally, the ZMT DataPortal provides access to historical and current (meta)data from ZMT research data.
The success of the RDS at ZMT is based on the interdisciplinary expertise of its team. Specialists in data management for the natural and social sciences, (geospatial) data collection, research systems engineering, and databases work closely together to develop tailored solutions. At a strategic level, management decisions shape the direction, priorities, and integration of the service within ZMT, as well as its multi-scale research landscape. This makes ZMT a compelling example of institutional research data management, combining expert-led operational assistance with a strong strategic foundation.
